With Trump’s win, what changes can we expect in healthcare and what will the fate of Obamacare be under this new administration? On this episode, founder of CHEKD.COM, Dr Aaron Grossman shares his insights, and also talks about the attack on the nuclear family and masculinity.
If you want to control groups of people, the most powerful force is the nuclear unit, it’s the polarization of masculine and feminine. - Dr. Aaron Grossman
Three Takeaways
At the start of the episode, we discussed the state of the country now that Donald Trump is president. We talked about how this will change the healthcare system, and how it can possibly shift things politically. “Everything is off the table, the layer has been peeled back.”
The healthcare system is having a light shone on it and this can help make necessary changes. We went on to talk about the attack on masculinity and the factors that have led to it, including what’s in the water supply. Towards the end of the show we discussed personalized health care.
On this episode we also covered:
The chaos we’re witnessing can be attributed to the complete disruption of the nuclear family and the polarization of masculine and the feminine. With many things, the layer is being peeled back and truth of corruption and issues is being revealed. Fear and the media is dictating how people feel more than reality. The only way out, is taking control of the family unit, and taking more control of the personalized care of our own health.

What is the importance of mentors for young men? What stress does body building subject your physiology to? On this episode, I talk to my mentor and friend Jim Brown, and we answer these questions and also discuss nootropics and proprietary blends and the best way to build an excellent physique.
The key to reaching your goals is having someone you listen to who has a way to make their program repeatable. They have to have a track record of it, and you need to listen to them person exclusively. -Jim Brown
Three Takeaways
At the start of the episode, Jim gave us a background of his life and how he got started with bodybuilding. He also talked about the importance of having a mentor and having a singular mission. What are the challenges veterans are met with when it comes to dealing with TBIs? How is the current healthcare system getting it wrong, and what changes can we expect under a new administration? On this episode, Andrew Marr talks about this and the Warrior Angel Foundation.
Doctors can get rid of inflammation and balance hormones, but if you continue to think unnerving thoughts that produce the same results, you’ve just made a feedback loop that is not going to improve itself. -Andrew Marr
Three Takeaways
At the start of the show, we talked about Andrew’s background and his personal experience with a TBI. He also gave us some insight into TBIs and the necessity of putting people in neuro-permissive environments. We went onto discuss the current state of the system that’s meant to help veterans and the solutions the Warrior Angel Foundation provides. Towards the end of the show, we discussed changes under the new administration.
People need to be able to be optimized. There needs to be a system in place with protocols, that can help people get better, stronger and more physically optimal. This rings especially true for the military medical model. Systems need to be put in place to promote neuro-plasticity, and help them heal and experience full lives.

We might be in the age of wisdom and information, but the internet and media is filled with deception and lies. Has this contributed to a global lack of awareness and a docile society? Is it GMO food, alcohol, lack of exercise or TV? Is it something far greater contributing the level of our vibrational states? On this episode we discuss this with host of The Leak Project, Rex Bear.
The only way you’re going to pursue the path of illumination and get to universal consciousness is to eventually kill the ego. -Jay Campbell
Three Takeaways
At the start of the show, we talked about religion and how it can be a form of mind control that can keep people from finding the truth. We also discussed how Rex toes the line of being agnostic and how people are becoming more aware. We went on to discuss the current political climate as well as ego death and astral projection.
Imagine being stuck inside a wall in perpetuity and only being able to move if it lets you. The only way to get outside of that is to completely eliminate the ego. As society progresses, there are going to be more people experiencing their awakening out of their docile state. Ultimately, the key to unlocking your awakening is learning to take everything with a grain of salt and realizing that the truth is in the middle, not the far left and far right.

A lot of the work we do to stay fit and healthy has to do with exercise and diet, but what about the internal reactions caused by what we eat? On this episode of the TRT Revolution, Paul Burgess is back to go deeper on food intolerance, exogenous ketones and digestive health.
When it comes to dieting, people grab onto the headlines that best suit them and this extends to ketogenic dieting. People often discount beneficial foods and underestimate the fact that they might have intolerances to so-called good foods. The only way to know if a specific item is good for your body, is to eliminate and reintroduce it to see what the reaction is. It’s a popular belief that men can naturally increase their testosterone by using methods like exercise and diet, which begs the question, is there a shortcut to increasing your testosterone? On this episode, we discuss this with writer and trainer Alexander Juan Antonio Cortes and also discuss politics and the future of America.
Three Takeaways
At the start of the show, we got right into the main topic of the show - how men can naturally boost their testosterone. The truth about this question is: there is no external way to elevate testosterone and even though some experts suggest diet and exercise, these things won’t make a meaningful and lasting difference. Next, we discussed the loss of masculinity in the world today, and how that has created a culture where people are happy to go with the masses and lack the inclination towards leadership, risk taking and decision-making.
If your testosterone levels are low, there is nothing external you can do with lifestyle to significantly elevate it in a meaningful way. Exercise and diet have a greater effect on your mood and disposition than on your actual body. What has fostered the mindset that it’s possible to boost externally is the media’s need to give us a quick solution. If you’re expecting true physiological changes you’ll be disappointed. There’s no substitute for taking testosterone - it will always be your best and most effective option.

When it comes creating the most normal hormonal landscape inside the body, what protocols, substances and dosages make the most impact and ensure that the body benefits? This week, we discuss this with TRT expert, author and founder of All Things Men Dr. John Crisler and discuss optimal treatment protocols and estrogen control.
Three Takeaways
At the start of the episode, Dr. John told us about his background and how he became involved in medicine with the aim of building a practice that would take care of body builders. Next, we discussed how doctors are managing endocrine systems and what it was like in the early days of the practice.
We also talked about estrogen management and the reasons for the high estrogen problem a lot of young men are facing. John says, “all males are being assaulted constantly by estrogen substances whether it’s soy products, pesticides, BPAs etc.” We discussed optimal treatment protocols and how Dr. John starts with the medical history, “80% of your diagnosis is going to be made on your medical history.” We also discussed how to stimulate the system for patients under 40. We also talked about Clomifene, DHEA, HCG and aromatase inhibitors.
We also discussed the choice between transdermals and shots when it comes to TRT. For a young male, gels mimic normal hormonal levels more closely that shots. They are variable through the day and stable across the week, whereas a shot is variable across the week and stable through the day. Towards the end of the show, we also discussed subcutaneous injections.
HRT for males under 40 requires system stimulation. Whatever protocols you employ should take into account the fact that hormones in younger men are more variable. The best protocol is a combination of HCG, a testosterone and some estrogen control along with DHEA. It’s important to remember that we’re all biochemically unique, so there is no one size fits all approach for any of us

Aesthetic medicine is an industry that combines art and science. It’s helping people by addressing concerns like collagen loss, bone structure atrophy and loss of jaw definition. What are the biggest trends and most popular procedures and products? This week we talk to Family Nurse Practitioner and Founder of Radiant MedSpa & Wellness, Alison Woodworth.
Three Takeaways
At the top of the show, we got some background on Alison and her path to her career in aesthetic medicine and age management. In terms of the breakdown of her patients, it is 80% women and 20% men, but the number of men continues to increase. Men are interested in procedures like dermal fillers that help to improve the jawline by sharpening it or replacing lost volume.
Next, we discussed neuromodulators like Botox. They are used to control the effects of muscular activity in the face, which lead to creasing and wrinkles. Botox works to relax the muscle groups, and is something that can even be employed to prevent the onset of wrinkles. Alison said, “If you try to start after the fact, it takes a lot longer for the crease to go away.” Alison also shared on other neuromodulators, Xiamen and Dysport. What the right one for you? She says patients have found Dysport to work faster and not be as stiff as Botox so it allows you to maintain natural facial expression. “The point isn’t to have no facial movement, it’s to have no wrinkles.”
We went onto to discuss dermal fillers and how they combat the yearly loss of 1% of collagen from 20, pain control and what your practitioner has to do with it. Towards the end of the show we talked about a new molecule that aids in the breakdown and absorption of dietary fat under the chin, HRT for women and the overprescribing issue in the medical industry right now.
Our facial expressions form lines, creases and wrinkles, and this paired with the loss of facial collagen causes bone and fat pad atrophy. Neuromodulators like Botox, Xiamen and Dysport relax very specific muscle groups and can be employed to sculpt the face again. Derma fillers are also effective in controlling the effects of skin aging. These procedures are meant to enhance natural beauty and masculinity, not leave your face looking stiff. Remember, if someone can point out the work you’ve had done, it’s not good work.

When it comes to back health, what are the biggest misconceptions and what are the exercises that makes the biggest difference in reducing pain? On this episode, we talk to author and doctor of spine biometrics Dr. Stuart McGill and discuss the programs he built to address body deficits and help build a pain free foundation.
Three Takeaways
At the top of the show Stuart McGill told us about his story and how he got started in his practice. With an interest in optimal spine function, the work he has done relies on his ability to probe a patient’s pain provocation mechanism. This goes against the current medical system trend which, “now revolves around the 15 minute appointment. There is no hope, for the physician to do a thorough enough assessment to arrive at a precise diagnosis of the pain.”
Next we went into detail about his work of assessing pain triggers and the book he wrote, The Back Mechanic. By helping his patients understand the nature of their pain he gives them “the liberation of knowing that you have control over your pain trigger.” We also talked about how Stuart believes in coaching people through pain instead of passing intervention. He also provided his best advice for maintaining back health - walking “in small intervals.”
We went onto touch on the modern workforce and why sitting in our chairs all day puts a lot of strain on our backs. He also stated the danger of going from that to going straight to the gym and how that can do even more damage. “You can have a mobile spine but you can bear really high loads or you can be a power lifter but you have to be stiffened in order to to do that.” To aid your back in the office, avoid overloading your spine for long periods by getting out of the chair, pushing for the ceiling, inhaling and exhaling. This will give your ligaments normal spinal stability. Toward the end of the show, we discussed chiropractic manipulation and Eastern medicine.
It’s very common for strength and conditioning coaches not to measure what that person’s particular body needs. Dr. Stuart McGill stresses the importance of that knowledge. It’s also necessary to remember these key points; the more you trigger back pain you get better at sensing it. After a back injury the body grows more nerves into the disc and every time you trigger pain you trigger easier the next time. Additionally, walking is necessary for back health, “That’s how our bodies were designed.”
Dr. Stuart M. McGill is a professor of spine biomechanics at the University of Waterloo (Waterloo, ON, Canada). His advice is often sought by governments, corporations, legal experts and elite athletes and teams from around the world. Difficult back cases are regularly referred to him for consultation. Patient care and health are on the verge of a paradigm shift, and personalized health professionals are on the tip of the spear. What are the biggest factors responsible for this shift? On this week’s episode I discuss this with the founder of Scala Precision Health, Russ Scala and touch on the current problems in healthcare, the drop in testosterone and TRT’s role in battling mental health issues and heart problems.
Three Takeaways
We kicked off the show with a bit of Russ Scala’s story and his interest in how stress compromises the body. This interest goes back to when he worked in the ER and later on as a SWAT team member. This led to him starting Scala Precision Health, an institution driven by the need to empower people to take their health into their own hands. There’s going to be a huge paradigm shift in health spurred on by the fact that healthcare in its current state cannot deal with a lot of health concerns.
We discussed the common stereotype - people thinking that doctors know everything. I asked Russ how he combats this way of thinking when dealing with older patients. Next we discussed the issue of low testosterone and the reasons behind it. Russ stresses the importance of environmental factors like pesticides, shampoo and other products the patient may have been exposed to.
Russ went onto mention the importance of a “a virus of knowledge” and creating content that educates the masses about taking their health into their own hands. This content should be aimed at families, and not doctors. Next we discussed the cardio protective elements of testosterone and what it does for your arteries on the cellular level. Towards the end of the show we discussed how testosterone also combats PTSD and diabetes. We also discussed Russ Scala’s perspective on ketogenic dieting.
The reality of healthcare is that doctors have filters that stand between them being able to really meet the needs of patients. This has left a space for a huge paradigm shift that will see people having more control over their own health. TRT is part of this shift, and through it we can begin to see changes in how we tackle mental illness and diabetes. The shift also means you can be the CEO of your own health.

With many advancements happening in technology, the collective health of society continues to regress due to engineered food, lack of exercise and the lack of knowledge about internal systems. What are the biggest trends we are noticing in this wave? I discuss this with doctor, author and medical prevention expert George Touliatos and also go into detail about performance enhancement in sports.
Three Takeaways
Dr. George gave a background of his career and how he aimed to combine his interest in sports with his medical expertise. He mainly deals with patients who use anabolic steroids, consulting on medical prevention so that they can take them in a healthier way and reduce side effects. “It’s not about doses, it’s about lifestyle and how you use the stuff.”
Next, I asked George how popular the use of anabolic steroids is in Europe. He said during summer the numbers jump to about 50% because people want to be leaner for beach weather. We went onto discuss the issue of high estrogenic body fat disposition that’s become more common in men over the last two decades. George attributes this issue to the fact that people are just not as active as they used to be and the fact that food is engineered. This has also contributed to the drastic drop in sperm count across the world.
We also discussed the state of performance enhancement in sports and the common misconception that doping tests provide 100% accuracy. In reality, athletes have found ways to work around the tests, especially at the highest levels where the stakes are high. Dr George also went into detail about the different factors that make it possible for people to cheat the system.
The biggest reasons people are going to be in need of HRT is exercise, diet and the lack of internal knowledge. Most people struggling with issues like estrogenic body fat won’t get the help they need because medical professions aren’t knowledgeable enough about it. An individual can control this by learning as much as they can about their own internal health.

Entrepreneurs commonly face struggles like generating a steady stream of leads and prospects, generating these leads at a reasonable cost and maximizing the overall value of your customers or clients. What is the best route to improving all these aspects of your business and what tools will you need? This week’s guest is the King of Copy, Craig Garber and he has plenty to share about business, content, enlightenment and health.
Three Takeaways
On this week’s show we discussed how entrepreneurs can solve lead generation struggles with valuable copy and written content. Craig Garber who has worked in over 100 industries provides key insights and best practices. Craig shared the importance of content that attracts people so that you don’t have to chase them, the type of relationship you build in attracting is different from the kind of work you would have to do to chase leads and clients. In the case of the former you will have more control and a more respectful dynamic with clients.
Craig also detailed his professional journey and answered a question about the tools that helped him grow his business and what entrepreneurs can learn. Strategy is important, and so is the maturity of not putting your problems on your clients’ shoulders. “Focus on what you can bring to them and not what they can bring to you.” It’s also necessary to be engaging through your content to make sure there’s a two-way communication taking place between you and the client.
I went onto ask Craig what he thinks is important when an entrepreneur is trying to build continuous relationships to which he said, “You want to interact frequently and have something worthy to say.” I also went onto ask him about how the average entrepreneur can stand out in the crowd and keep their database informed. He stressed the importance of sincerity, authenticity, and writing the way you speak. The best writers online nowadays know how to make the content accessible and package the content in bitesized paragraphs to make it an easier read.
Towards the end of the show we talked about;
Your marketing will only ever be as good as the copy created for it, so it’s necessary to make it an investment. The rules of writing good copy are simple; be sincere and authentic. Don’t aim to sell all the time. People are starved of authenticity nowadays so if you can provide it in an interested and engaging way, you will get ahead.

The American healthcare model has taken the power out of the hands of doctors, and ultimately the average person has suffered the consequences of this shift. How can we avoid the bureaucratic nightmare and get the quality of care that sustains our health? This week we talk to doctor and founder of CHEKD.com Dr. Aaron Grossman about preventative healthcare and how to get the best care in this system.
Three Takeaways
It’s one thing to eat well, train and take supplements but that’s one part of the equation. The other half is understanding what is happening internally.
Forget the systemic, bureaucracy of the healthcare system, take ownership of your health.
The future of healthcare will be personalized and mobile.
Article
At the start of the podcast, Aaron introduced himself and shared the professional and personal journey he took that created his interest in preventative medicine. He grew up in a family that was into it and his own father ran a nutrition focused business, and this undoubtedly planted the seeds. After going to medical school, he realized that the practice was logistically set up in a way that did not suit him or really help people, and he switched to psychiatry.
Next we talked about the current state of healthcare in America, and Aaron shared that 81% of doctors want to extricate themselves from medicine because the system in place isn’t working. We turned the discussion to preventative medicine and why it isn’t a field hospitals are interested in. The current system makes money when more people are sick, overweight and using pills.
The average doctor is not talking about preventative medicine because there’s no money in it, and a lot of people have the image of doctors as the people that know everything, so they just follow what they say.
Why should people take their healthcare into their own hands and what can the average person do to ensure they are taking care of their health in the best way? Aaron described the current system most hospitals are running - it’s one that’s driven by the comfort of doctors. This means a lot of patients become numbers in the system and that leads to death in many cases. If you’re healthy, the last thing you need is to be a number in the system. Take your health out of the bureaucracy of the current healthcare system and take it into your own hands. This is where personalized healthcare comes in.
We go onto talk about the conception of Aaron’s service, CHEKD.com and why it’s necessary. We discussed the importance of knowing what’s happening with your own internal biomarkers. Even if you work out, eat healthy and take supplements, if you don’t know what’s happening internally, you’re not going to get the full benefit. “Everything you do is meaningless till you understand what’s really going on.” CHEKD.com takes the difficulty out of getting your blood work, and through it, you can avoid the bureaucratic nightmare and get the service you deserve.
Thanks to the current state of healthcare, the image of the white coat doctor who knows all and does everything to save a patient is gone. The process of getting standard care is fraught with difficulties and people ultimately end up as numbers in a system, and they don’t get the attention or quality of care they need to get better. You can avoid this by taking your health into your own hands and adopting a preventative health mindset. You’ll never have to get stuck in a system that’s working against you.

Health and fitness gurus often push calorie counting and macros on their clients but what’s missing from their guidance? Nutritionist Paul Burgess explains why clients need to understand food and its environment before anything else, and how his practice does exactly that. We also get special insight into food sensitivities and ketogenic diet tactics.
Three Takeaways
Macros can be misleading because people don’t just fit into specific categories. Macros also fail to take individual allergies and sensitivities into account.
If you put on weight quickly that means your body doesn’t take fat and sugar well. Consider intermittent fasting to allow your body to improve its sensitivity to glucose.
To take stress off your system, get your diet right and get your gut right.
The show started with Paul giving a bit of a background about his interest in fitness and nutrition. His focus was always on having a long healthy life. After leaving the investment industry in London he began his work in the nutritional coaching industry.
Paul noted the big difference between the needs of a client in their 30s and a client in their 40s, but he stated that his process is the same for every client he works with. “Clients come with different goals but there are two things you need to do before anything, and if you are not doing those things then there’s no point going any further.”
Paul believes in first evaluating what the client is eating to flag any potential intolerances and sensitivities, then he likes to examine the environment that the food goes into. “If you’re eating crap you’ll never flourish properly or optimize anything in your system.” He goes on to add, “you can have the best diet in the world but if it’s not getting absorbed properly, and is compromised - you are still not going to absorb those nutrients and you’re still going to have problems.”
Paul went into detail the testing process his clients go through, as a way of ascertaining the diet adjustments they need to make. Paul looks at a three-month window of reactivity to a certain range of food and these findings give a closer look at the markers for health. The information simplifies the process of addressing organ health and a client will know which foods to use and which ones to avoid.
We turn our conversation to an example of the kinds of tests Paul would run and how he’d use the data gained from them. For the average person with a high amount of liver enzymes, lifestyle plays a huge role and the result would be non-alcoholic fatty liver disease caused by insulin resistance or sensitivity. “Once your liver is compromised in that way, it functions sub-optimally.” We also discuss the foods that are most reactive for a lot of people. Contrary to popular belief wheat and gluten are not number one on that list. Eggs, almonds, walnuts and whey protein are much higher on that list. Paul also stated that a lot of people are commonly intolerant to beef, potatoes and kidney beans.
Towards the end of the interview Paul and I touched on;
Modern society has been ruined by additives, GMOs and environmental toxins and this gets in the way of health. Before considering a new diet, make the effort to have yourself tested for food sensitivities and any digestive problems that might curb any progress you’ll make in fitness and nutrition. The work of becoming healthier becomes much lighter once you’re empowered by this information.
Paul is the founder of Athletic Fitness & Nutrition, which he created with the purpose of being able to deliver the highest specification, most cutting edge physical training techniques and nutrition advice. In his mid 30’s he decided to turn his passion for fitness into his full time career and became a nutritionist and personal trainer gaining Diploma’s in Clinical Nutrition, Personal Training and Anti-Ageing. High iron levels can negate your good diet and exercise habits while raising your risk of age-related diseases like cancer and heart disease. In our latest episode Dennis Mangan shares the best methods for testing for high iron and reducing iron to healthy levels in your system, plus touches on the benefits of intermittent fasting and his perspective on SARM’s.
Dennis started with the basics of iron as a reactive element. Iron reacts with different constituents in our body, so the more iron in our body the more damage it causes. The #1 storage mechanism for iron in our bodies is our blood. Interestingly, Dennis points out than 10% of people in the US are truly iron-deficient, and those are mostly pre-menopausal women.
The basic problem is this: Our bodies are evolutionarily conditioned to retain iron, so we have exquisite internal mechanisms for grabbing onto iron and no controlled means for getting rid of it.
Over the years our bodies gradually accumulate iron and continue accumulating it beyond a healthy point. In fact, Dennis explained, “The average 35-yr old man has about 4-5x the amount of iron in his body as a woman the same age.”
Our internal systems for mitigating the damage of iron aren’t perfect, resulting in age-related diseases like cancer, heart disease, Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s, all of which afflict men at much higher rates. So you may have your diet and exercises and sleep dialed in, but an over-accumulation of iron may negate those good habits.
Then Dennis went into detail on how to get your iron to healthy levels; “Know your ferritin levels – this test is the most common measure of the level of stored iron in your body...The #1 most effective way to get rid of iron is blood donation. The average man who donates blood once a year cuts his ferritin levels in half.”
If you’re not qualified to donate blood you have other options for lowering iron levels, from exercise to supplements and diet habits that inhibit iron uptake. There are no iron-reducing pharmaceutical products, which explains why there’s no incentive to raise public awareness of the issue. We hear much more about cholesterol as the cause of age-related issues like heart disease, because there are so many cholesterol-reducing drugs being pushed on the public.
We finish up by touching on the benefits of intermittent fasting and keto powders. Intermittent fasting puts you into a state when your body is burning fat for fuel, and keto supplement powders that help put your body into ketosis faster can help you fast longer and reduce hunger pangs.
There is an important point to remember- Adding protein or BCAA’s during your fast will cause an insulin response and mitigate the benefits of intermittent fasting. All studies show that intermittent fasting does NOT burn muscle - provided you’re getting enough calories overall.
To get the benefits of intermittent fasting, start by experimenting with minimizing your eating window – skipping breakfast and shutting down food intake at 8pm - to turn on your body’s fat burning furnace.
Iron levels are so critical to aging that excess iron may negate all your good diet, exercise and sleep habits. So getting your iron to healthy levels should be an integral part of your self-directed health management. Start by working with forward-thinking doctors who can help analyze your lab tests and donating blood 1-2x per year.

Esoteric researcher and author Matthew LaCroix shares his perspective on modern medicine, suppression of plant-based cures such as cannabinoids. Matt and Jay also dive deep into consciousness, awareness, focusing on the present, reconnecting with nature and the influences and experiences that inspired his book, The Illusion of Us.
The interview kicked off with Matt’s background and early writing influences including Graham Hancock, explaining “There was a lot of information being suppressed and not being talked about.”
A big part of Matt’s drive to research alternative and natural health solutions comes from his wife being diagnosed with multiple sclerosis. Matt dove into research and came to the conclusion that “the so-called medicine we were being given...was causing harm.” Matt also pointed out that they were able to transition off pharmaceuticals completely, and she has stayed off for 2 ½ years.
Next Jay and Matt turned to the subject of cannabinoids, and Matt pointed out, “The first thing we have to do is separate the idea of someone ever getting high... Cannabinoids and cannabis are just one little piece of an enormous palette of natural plants that we used to use for thousands of years that became pushed out by artificial components and the pharmaceutical industry.”
Matt went on to explain, “Every component of cannabis, it sounds too good to be true. The seeds of cannabis have the most amount of protein of any seed on earth. We could eliminate hunger on the earth by cannabis seeds alone.”
So why are cannabis and cannabinoids being suppressed? “There is no money in a cure,” Matt pointed out. “If you had both, the natural component side, and the natural was vastly superior to the synthetic, nobody would be taking artificial drugs to begin with. So the only way to keep those in the system is demonize and basically not even create medicines out of the natural ones.”
After discussing consciousness, awareness and nature, Jay and Matt shift to Matt’s book, The Illusion of Us. Matt shared his perspective on consciousness and the modern world, “Cities and cars, going out to dinners or the movies, those are all just things we’ve created in the last hundred years. Those aren’t real. They’re just things that distract us from what IS real.”
It’s essential to step back from the distractions of our ego-driven culture to reconnect with our true consciousness. Matthew’s story is a great example of a simple, relentless search for truth in a world that does everything it can to demonize and suppress it.

Fitness levels, recovery periods and the body’s response to exercise changes as we get older. How does a person over 40 get a workout that gives them results while still avoiding injury, overtraining and overtaxing your nervous system? On this episode, Jay Campbell talks with fitness coach and writer Bryan Krahn, who provides a guide for training in your 40s.
We started off the episode with the core topic of the day - fitness over 40. On the subject Bryan says it’s impossible to prescribe a blanket statement to an entire age group but there are key trends that have to be modified because you’re aging. There are people that respond much better and that’s because they come from an active background and follow a quasi-athlete lifestyle. For older people, when your training, nutritional and lifestyle factors are dialed in you actually look better because you’re neurologically more efficient. Also, if you’ve been training for 25 years consistently with an appreciable load, your muscles develop a hardness and density that doesn’t happen over a short period of time.
Bryan added a key benefit to training when you’re older, “you get good at this, you figure out how your body works and you allow yourself to get into a really good rhythm. When you’re young you jump from trend to trend but when you’re older you figure out what truly works for you.” To develop the kind of mastery that benefits your physique it’s important to get into habit and learn your body. “Everyone has a slightly different recovery pattern and mental things that keep them engaged and you learn what those things are.”
Jay then turned the discussion to the matter of programming. Bryan stated that he had to draw a line in the sand when it came to strength training even though there’s a huge push for it online. He said, “volume is what you have to curtail as you get older.” If you keep busting heavy loads and low rep sets it crushes you way faster than doing normal body building sets. It’s way less impactful, you bounce back faster and it builds a better physique and there’s less risk of injury.
Bryan aims to get his older clients out of the habit of loading more bars and more into the training experience, figuring out baseline volume and working their way up.
On the subject of isolation exercises for older people, Byran said, “isolation work is important because it allows you to have a much more focused and better mind to muscle connection, there’s a lower risk potential, you won’t injure yourself as much. Jay and Bryan then focus in on overtraining, which Bryan calls “the boogie man of body building.” People over 40 typically are not overtraining and doing things like bench presses because their shoulders can’t handle that anymore. Strength training is something many glamorize but it can cause injury if you’re not built for it.
For most people who go to the gym recreationally, you’re not going to overtrain but you might overreach - especially if your lifestyle isn’t aligned to your workout regimen. Bryan reminded us to look out for the signs, which include things like negative self-talk and feeling like exercise is a chore. When this happens, it’s time to do a little less work and get some sleep. Jay closed the interview with a question about the cardio and resistance training balance when you’re older. He said he leans more on the strength training side but he uses cardio as a stress management tool, a good stress management tool.
Bryan’s tips for training over 40 are to start off with a realistic assessment of where you are, focusing on the quality of your work in the gym instead of performance. Lastly and most importantly make sure you avoid injury because it sets you back and recovery is harder when you’re older.
Bryan Krahn is a personal trainer, fitness writer, blogger, online physique coach and creator of
The Physique Mastery Principles. He specializes “in helping make ordinary bodies look incredible.” Bryan is also a “semi-serious physique athlete,” who enjoys building a lean, muscular, aesthetic body which he believes makes him a better coach.

Nelson Vergel, author of the landmark book Testosterone: A Man’s Guide, joins to share his story of overcoming a deadly diagnosis, helping to pioneer the use of anabolic steroids in HIV/AIDS treatment and his perspective on life goals and awareness.
We started with Nelson’s background growing up in Venezuela. Nelson wanted to get into medicine but opportunity was limited, so instead he got into the oil and gas industry as an environmental engineer before emigrating to the US in 1984. Shortly after settling down in the States Nelson was diagnosed with HIV, at that time the equivalent of a death sentence. In fact, one counselor told him, “Go home, pray, and take care of your business.”
Nelson pulled himself up, telling himself, “I refuse to die” and soon he spotted an opportunity. “I became obsessed. I found out the CDC for the first time was training volunteers who wanted to inform themselves and become counselors.” This had a major impact on him, “It really helped me. I really got it. I got what it is to help others get out of your head, get out of your self pity, get aware of your power. Power even in the worst situation in your life, not to let that rule you and define you.”
Nelson jumped at another opportunity, this time to join a study for a new drug called AZT. He seemed to be doing well, even hiding the illness from co-workers. It was later revealed that Nelson was in the placebo group, which turned out to be a blessing, as patients receiving the real AZT in the study were wasting away. Nelson lost so many friends to HIV in the 80’s that he stopped counting at 35, including his boyfriend who was also in the AZT trial. “I feel like I aged a lot in my soul...Every week was a memorial service. I shut down.”
Nelson was transferred to LA and joined a support group where he encountered bodybuilders for the first time. With nothing to lose, Nelson started taking supplements and alternative therapies and immediately felt more energy. Once again, Nelson’s dream of working in medicine and health resurfaced. He started researching, subscribing to the top AIDS newsletters in the country, often reading till the early hours of the morning.
This led to a major turning point, where Nelson came across an article by a “Dr. X” who was HIV+ and had risen from his deathbed by using anabolic steroids. Nelson, with the help of friends, connected with him and other researchers and doctors. Through these relationships and his own research, Nelson began working on his book and then lecturing across the country, eventually delivering over 600 lectures.
Nelson gets messages everyday from people who’ve been impacted by his writing, “Every time I give, I get a lot more back.” Jay agreed, “Once you align yourself with being generous, paying it forward, always being of the mindset to help other people, it’s amazing what comes into your life.”
Nelson shared his perspective on ego, “You’re going to have an ego voice that’s going to try to tell you that you’re not worthy. That you’re not good looking, not smart enough, or whatever.” He went on to explain you’re never really cured, but you can come to a place where you recognize the ego as something outside of yourself. It’s not you.
Drawing from his incredible story and wealth of research, Nelson’s continues to mentor and inspire through relationships with people all over the world. We hope you come away from this interview inspired to pursue your dreams, help other people and reach new levels of health and wellness.
Nelson Vergel is the best-selling author of Testosterone: A Man’s Guide and founder of Excel Male, a platform where men can exchange cutting-edge and evidence-based health information. How do you choose your supplements? In our latest episode, Kamal Patel, Director of Examine.com, joins us for a wide-ranging conversation on supplement quality, chronic joint pain, ketogenic dieting, intermittent fasting and other high impact lifestyle changes that are more effective than any supplement.
We started with Kamal’s story, how he came to the world of fitness and nutrition and eventually became Director of Examine.com. Kamal explained “Like a lot of people, I got started in nutrition to simply look better...Up till probably sophomore year of college I had never lifted a weight in a gym.”
First Kamal gave his opinion on ketogenic and other forms of low-carb dieting. “You require carbohydrate for joint health especially when it’s injured. But that’s not even the primary thing, your immune system needs, say, 100 grams a day of carbs for optimal function in most people...So I’d be very careful not to dip carbs too low...There’s no huge benefit.”
Next we go into intermittent fasting: Kamal pointed out that it’s reasonably effective for body fat loss but the best reason to use intermittent fasting is longevity. Jay pointed out, “The neuroprotective effect of fasting is amazing” Gut and intestinal tract health is getting more attention, and Kamal explained that it’s probably more important to look at gut health more any other individual element. He mentioned that there are a couple great elements of a low-card diet on the gut, but on the whole, a vegan diet is much better for gut health.
Next we cover how to handle the chronic joint pain, and Kamal have an interesting recommendation “You don’t want to take supplements while you’re doing other things that have a higher chance of working...taking micro-breaks during work... or even incorporating standing for maybe a half hour or hour a day, that’s probably greater than any individual supplement for knee and ankle issues.” He also pointed out that Vitamin D, K2 and magnesium are the holy trinity of things people overlook for joint health.
Then we turn to common supplements like creatine and protein. Kamal pointed out that creatine may have mental health benefits such as preventing Alzheimer’s and depression and potentially have some pain-reduction effects. As for protein Kamal prefers to experiment but has not seen major differences but prefers cold-processed to get glutathione benefits.
We finished out the interview with thoughts on limiting or blocking blue light at night, wearing blue blocker sunglasses for 30 minutes before bed is a great way to prepare your body for sleep. We also covered mindfulness meditation, it’s effectiveness and taking first steps into that method.
Kamal made a couple important distinctions - quality of supplement doesn’t mean effectiveness, and how you handle blue light can have a greater effect than any supplements.
Kamal Patel is a nutrition researcher with an MPH and MBA from Johns Hopkins University, and is on hiatus from a PhD in nutrition in which he researched the link between diet and chronic pain. He has published peer-reviewed articles on vitamin D and calcium as well as a variety of clinical research topics. Kamal has also been involved in research on fructose and liver health, mindfulness meditation, and nutrition in low income areas. How far away are we from taking TRT mainstream and making it the standard for patient care? Dr. Jim Meehan joins us to share his perspective on TRT/HRT, the role of pharmaceutical lobbying, addiction, media reaction to TRT and impending changes in the healthcare sector.
First we covered Dr. Meehan’s background as a surgeon, athlete and martial artist, and the physical breakdowns and symptoms that led Jim to discover his low-T. As a result of his discoveries and treatment, Dr. Meehan lost over 70 lbs, won the Naga World Jiu-Jitsu Championship, became a better father and husband while recovering his passion for life.
Dr. Meehan also shared why he’s working on technology-related solutions, “We under-utilize technology in medicine. We’re 20 years behind the financial industry, for example. There’s great opportunity to use technologies.”
Next we dig into the current state of TRT and the role of the pharmaceutical industry in keeping testosterone treatments artificially expensive while suppressing correct information about TRT: “Hormone replacement therapy doesn’t need to cost $500 or $1000 a month,” Dr. Meehan explained, “It’s really pretty inexpensive.” He went on to point out, “The pharmaceutical industry pumps more money into our legislatures than anybody else, more than any other industry and more than most other industries combined. It’s trillions of dollars. That’s the only thing preventing the solid scientific evidence of the benefits, the safety, the efficacy of male hormone replacement therapy from reaching a mainstream, insurance-reimbursed model.”
Dr. Meehan also had a scathing review of his fellow physicians; “Too many of my colleagues are simply mouthpieces for the pharmaceutical industry. That’s why we end up with male HRT being dominated by Androgel.”
We also cover addiction, it’s role in society and the physical symptoms that fly under the radar without being tied to the addictive cause. “The big picture is this: Everybody is addicted to something. It’s caffeine, nicotine, pornography, gambling. Sugar is a huge addiction in this country...Pay attention to your addictions. They have more impact on your life than you realize. Every time you are hitting the dopamine centers in your brain, you are degenerating those neurons, your ability to release dopamine is inhibiting your ability to feel pleasure, interested in things, to be even be functional in life. You will slide into a dopamine deficiency state that by itself, just from the addictant itself and the banging up of those neurons, that will leave you in a really bad depressive state.”
Since many addictions involve opioids, Dr. Meehan also explained, “There’s nothing that will destroy your testosterone or your life faster than opioids. That medication has a very short window of efficacy... If you use it for more than 7-14 days, it will stop working and start hurting.”
We also discussed the state of our environment and all the toxic substances we come in contact with which contribute to low-T, Dr. Meehan agreed, pointed out “One thing isn’t going to kill us, but we’re being bombarded by thousands of those things every day. That in itself is destroying fertility, testosterone production and health in this country.”
We finished our interview by discussing the state of media, healthcare and politics. We agree that the media is driving much of mainstream opinion on TRT/HRT by giving credence to flawed studies which have led to class-action lawsuits. In fact, Dr. Meehan believes part of this backlash may be due to the average media member suffering from low-T/high estrogen and cannot overcome their own confirmation bias and cognitive dissonance.
“Its sad to see a country that is run by so many people who got there, not because of their clear thought and intellectual superiority or strength and commitment to sound ideals, but got there because they manipulated and connived and schemed.”
Dr. Meehan believes that we are only a couple years away from TRT being the standard for patient care, partially because of major transformations coming to the healthcare sector in general.
”It’s a foundational issue, Jay. If you have a guy who’s at 138 testosterone...fix that problem first. Maybe at the same time get him sleeping better, get him on some targeted nutrition and supplements, and all this other stuff goes away. You don’t need Lipitor, or Prozac or Xanax, you don’t need all this other crap that just makes them sicker.”
Jim Meehan, MD is an entrepreneur, accomplished leader, physician, founder and CEO at CatalystMD. Jim is a passionate health, wellness, and fitness advocate, as well as a lifelong martial artIst, NAGA World Jiu-Jitsu Champion, and inducted member of the Martial Arts Masters Hall of Fame. How do you limit simple carb consumption, fight metabolic disease and slow (or even reverse) the aging process? Dr. Brett Osborn, neurosurgeon and author of Get Serious, shares some simple rules for intermittent fasting, why insulin sensitivity is the key to fat loss, how different body types can adapt their diets to benefit from ketosis, and why YOU are ultimately in control of you body, regardless of genetics.
First we cover how fat loss is determined by your insulin sensitivity and why most of us are becoming insulin-resistant. Dr. Osborn calls it the Boy Who Cried Wolf Syndrome. “If you show your cells lots and lots of simple carbohydrates, your body will become less and less sensitive to the insulin secreted by the pancreas in response to the sugar load...Glucose that is consumed in your diets will literally wreak havoc in your cardiovascular system...So you want to make sure your cells are really, really sensitive to the effects of insulin by not showing them high levels of insulin.”
We also covered the role of muscle mass and body types in relation to insulin and body fat. “Equally important to our insulin-sensitivity is getting a good amount of muscle mass on your body,” Dr. Osborn explained, “that’s how you control your blood glucose...that’s going to improve your insulin-sensitivity.”
When it comes to body types, it’s not an even playing field, but you’re not genetically doomed to a certain body type. “You have to be aware of it,” Dr. Osborn pointed out, “but you can move your body any way with an awareness of your carbohydrate sensitivity or your insulin-sensitivity, etc, just by switching your carbohydrates one way or another.”
Then we moved on to ketogenic diets and intermittent fasting, and Dr. Osborn shared his perspective on ketogenic supplements, which he believes overstates their effectiveness. However, he puts his brain tumor patients on ketogenic diets because cancer cells love sugar, and low-carb diets deprive cancer cells of the substrate needed for cancer-cell growth. He also puts patients on Kegenix as a supplement for its “anti-cancer properties” and to help the body use something other than simple carbs as fuel.
Dr. Osborn emphasized, “The genesis of all these diseases - cancer, diabetes, heart attack, stroke, Alzheimer’s disease - they are metabolic diseases due to overconsumption of simple carbohydrates. So if you can use something else as an energy source...use it.”
Regarding ketosis, Dr. Osborn advises his patients to follow a simple rule, No eating after 7pm. That gives them a simple, easy to follow protocol that results in 12-hr bursts of intermittent fasting (7pm-7am) where they are starting to aggressively burn fat toward the end of that period. “The beautiful thing about being in ketosis...ketones, at the level of the brain, suppress your appetite.” Dr. Osborn recommends that if you’re struggling with intermittent fasting, take some ketones and zero-carb protein to hold you over.
But what about building muscle on a ketogenic diet? “There’s only one sport that you need to have glucose in your body in order to perform well...Bodybuilding.” Dr Osborn explained, “That will never work on a ketogenic diet, but you know what? So what. It’s not about bodybuilding, it’s about health.”
Bottom line - Some form of carb-cycling or intermittent fasting is the absolute be-all end-all of modulating body weight, losing body weight and at the same time maintaining performance.
We finished by covering how Dr. Osborn’s practice is evolving, the potential of a follow up to his book Get Serious, and how he’s moving toward the goal of multiple locations and expanding his reach nationwide.
Ultimately, you are not destined to be obese or sick because of your genetics. You - the individual - are in control of your body. Experiment with intermittent fasting and limit simple carbs to improve your body’s insulin-sensitivity and fight metabolic disease.
