People have been led to believe popping a pill is enough to solve any health problem, but this does more harm than good in the long-term. What are the merits of functional and holistic medicine when it comes to treating the root causes of disease? How can doctors get through to someone who is reluctant to get the help they need? Why is diet such a key point of cutting down inflammation? On this episode, Dr. Louis Esquivel draws on 3 decades of medical experience to share on why we should be adopting a more functional and holistic approach to our health.

Three Takeaways

  • A lot of drugs that physicians are prescribing to mask symptoms or “control” certain issues are actually doing something worse downstream.

  • The things that will keep us healthy and optimized often take more time and planning than the easy route of popping a pill-- but it’s worth it.

  • The fundamental basis of a lot of problems is inflammation, and diet can make a tremendous difference.

At the start of the show, Dr. Louis shares how his passion for holistic medicine was inspired by his interest in fitness and trying to help his own son. Next, we talked about why the zone of dysfunction is so important in functional medicine.

We also discussed:

  • How men are their own worst enemies when it comes to health
  • The one “card” Dr. Esquivel will always play when he starts treating someone

Traditional medicine tends to ignore the space between normal health and bad health. However, this zone of dysfunction is very important because that’s where most people are suffering, and it’s where people can be saved before it’s too late. Sure, taking pills can control a symptom, but it won’t solve the problem at the root of the dysfunction. You have to care enough about yourself and realize you’re going to have to do things that take more time and planning for you to be optimized for the long run.
